ERAS Headshots in Charleston, SC: What Every Medical Residency Applicant Needs to Know

If you’re applying for medical residency or fellowship through ERAS®, you already know how much is riding on your application. Your personal statement, board scores, letters of recommendation, every element is scrutinized. Your photo is no different.

That said, here’s everything you need to know to get this right.

ERAS® has specific technical requirements for application photos. As of the current application cycle, they are:

• Dimensions: 2.5 x 3.5 inches
• Format: JPEG, color, not AI-generated
• File size: 150 KB or less
• Resolution: medium-level print / 150 DPI

That file size limit trips up a lot of applicants. A photo taken on a modern smartphone can easily be several megabytes (more than ten times the allowed size). Compressing it yourself often degrades quality in ways that are obvious to anyone looking at your application.

The difference between a professional studio headshot and a phone photo, even a good one, is visible. Studio lighting, professional direction, and proper retouching will always produce a result that reads as intentional and polished in a way that DIY photos rarely do.

The cost of a professional ERAS headshot is small relative to the cost of your application fees, travel for interviews, and the years of training that led you here. It’s worth doing this right.

This is one of the most common questions we hear, and the answer depends slightly on your specialty, but a few rules apply broadly:

• White coat: Wearing your white coat is a common and appropriate choice for most clinical specialties. It immediately communicates your role and reads clearly in the context of a residency application.
• Business attire: A suit or blazer in a neutral color (navy, charcoal or black) is equally professional and works well across all specialties, including research-focused programs. Business attire also allows your ERAS headshot to serve multiple purposes, from your residency application to LinkedIn and other professional profiles.
• Avoid: Busy patterns, bright colors, large logos, and casual clothing. Avoid scrubs, t-shirts, hoodies and casual button-downs. The goal is for the viewer’s attention to land on your face, not your outfit.
• Bring options: We recommend arriving with two outfit choices. Once you see yourself on camera, you’ll have a clear sense of which reads better, and we’ll give you honest guidance during the session.

Our ERAS Express sessions are designed around your schedule. The session itself runs 25 minutes — efficient, but it’s not rushed. Here’s what to expect:

1. We’ll briefly discuss your goals – specialty, target programs, the overall impression you want to make.
2. We’ll guide you on positioning and expression – not stiff, not overly casual. The goal is to ensure you look confident and approachable.
3. We shoot, and you see results immediately – images display on a large monitor in real time so you can see what’s working and make adjustments on the spot.
4. You select your image before leaving – there’s no waiting and wondering. You’ll know that you have what you need before you leave the studio.
5. Your retouched, ERAS-formatted image is delivered within one business day.

ERAS® applications typically open in the summer for the following match cycle, with most applicants submitting in September and October. We recommend booking your headshot session by mid-August at the latest. Earlier if your schedule allows.
