Preparing For Your Session

The goal of a high-end headshot session is to capture you looking like you would on your best ever day! If you can, drink lots of water the day before and get a good night’s sleep as it has a positive effect on how your skin will look.

You’ve made a commitment of time and money, so it’s important that you arrive ready. We’ll capture amazing shots and have some fun along the way.

The most important aspect of your wardrobe choice is that you look and feel good in it. That said, there are a few things that will help ensure that YOU are the star of your photo.

  • Avoid loud patterns, such as stripes and polka dots or busy floral prints. Choose solid colors that you look great in.
  • Clothing with logos should be avoided, if possible.
  • Be sure your clothing has been pressed and is as wrinkle-free as possible. It’s a good idea to bring extra clothing on hangers.
  • Business attire is preferred, but not necessary. Feel free to wear flip flops and shorts if that makes you comfortable – we’ll only be capturing photos from your chest up.
  • If you have any interest in full-body portraits (or think you may), bring along nice footwear and full outfits.

If you are unsure about your choices, feel welcome to bring a few options and we can look through them together.

Please use a lip balm the day before and day of your shoot. Dry lips do not look great in photos and we want you to look better than great.

If you wear glasses and have contacts, it would be great to use the contacts so that you may be photographed with and without your frames. If you have different styles of frames, bring those as well.

Avoid necklaces altogether as they can be distracting. If your ears are pierced, by all means wear earrings, but a simple stud is preferable to anything dangly.

  • If you will be wearing make-up, please arrive make-up ready.
  • The best way to go is simple and clean. One of the most common detractors in a headshot is heavy makeup.
  • Bring your makeup with you in case you need to touch up or want to make adjustments after seeing some of the shots.

Extra Tips for Women

  • Bring 3 or more of your best fitting tops and dresses.
  • Depending on the style you’re looking for, feel free to bring one or two professional jackets to complement the dresses or tops.
  • Bring tops that either contrast or complement the color of your hair. This helps create separation between your hair and clothing of choice.

Extra Tips for Men

  • Make sure to be clean-shaved or beard trimmed, paying close attention to those little hairs that grow everywhere.
  • Consider bringing at least 2 suit or sports jackets, and 3 of your best fitting plain shirts.
  • Shirts with straight collars work better than floppy collars. Be sure to iron or remove wrinkles.
  • A tie isn’t necessary, but adds a nice touch. See how to tie a full Windsor knot or a half Windsor knot.
  • If considering a headshot with a tie, bring a selection of ties that go with your shirt selection.
